Take a Hint

Seeing only part of a thing makes me look closer.

Wondering what it is.

What does the rest of it look like?

If the whole image is visible, there is no mystery, nothing left to the imagination. It may be a beautiful, spectacular image, but I won’t spend as much time with it as I would if it was just a hint of something.

It’s the same with artworks. If there is only part of an image, the viewer is left to their imagination to fill in the rest of it. And, they may fill it in mentally in a different way each time they see it. So when you see a hint of an object in an artwork, take the hint and run with it.
